Auto-link posts to Wiki articles

Auto-link posts to Wiki articles

This modification is still in the planning process since I am finishing up the navbits mod.

Features:
- When a new post is made, cross-reference it with all Wiki articles and link the text to articles of that name.
- Will not interfere with URLs, HTML links, BB-code links, or BB-code Wiki links.
- New Update Counters option in the vBulletin Maintenance tab to process old posts and newly edited posts.

I may have forgotten some of the possibilities here, but I'm positive this will be easier than this darn navbits code, since I don't have to deal with the parser or MediaWiki at all really.

pegasus,

Just was going to recommend someone setup this modication, as it would be a great way to better integrate the Wiki into the forum itself. So basically, with this hack, lets say I write in my post,

"So there I was sitting yesterday on this bench, when all of a sudden my hat flew off! I had to run after it down the sidewalk, and eventually caught it."

The underlined words could automatically be linked to articles, "bench", "hat", and sidewalk" without my the writer having to do anything. Do I have this correct?

Thinking outloud, this is basically a textlinkads hack that basically utilizes the same concept to interlink pages within a given community forum.

I am not sure how you do this exactly, but will there be a feature to minimize how many links are on a given page? Obviously, we dont want every other word being linked to an article.

Looking forward to finding out more.

Is this what you guys are talking about? We're using it on a forum I'm working with. You type your post then highlight a word click the Wiki button in the post editor and its linked.

Or, are you talking about the system automatically identifying keywords and linking itself?

Automatically identifying keywords and linking itself.

Huge time saver especially if you don't want to go through 1000s of threads and link all the keywords to Wiki pages manually.

I don't know how soon I'll get around to coding this though. It's a low priority in my mods-to-write list.

How valued would it be if you had a gauranteed tip in your tip jar for it!? Haha, we'd love to support it down the road as we will probably really want it by April or May.

That could encourage me to get around to it sooner, certainly. Right now I'm working on halving the queries on all my vBulletin pages by rearranging all the vB code. Profiles and the User CP are the hardest to do...

But once I'm doing with that, rewriting my navbits mod to not use a query, coding my own downloads add-on, I will certainly get around to it. Since I'm sure linking keywords from posts to Wiki articles would be helpful for noobs who are afraid to ask what people are talking about.

In the modification I was thinking, though, the "keywords" were just going to be the titles of pages. The rest (partial titles, colloquial references) should probably be done manually just so words don't start linking to the wrong articles.

Good call on that, this would remove a good chunk of bad links. Though most page titles from a Wiki will be descriptive, some are still abbreviations.

Is this to speed up your forum by having it run less queries? How's it coming along?

Coming along quite well. So far I have:

Forum Home: 11 queries - was 19
Forumdisplay: 16 & 17 queries ?! That needs tweaking... - was 21
Showthread: between 10 & 12 - was between 22 & 25
User CP: 16 queries - was 19
Profiles: 15 queries - was 18
Search: 5 queries

In general I haven't touched the old vBulletin pages. Also I don't really care about the number of queries (also you can't really do much about them) when someone posts a thread or something, since I think they expect a slight wait after hitting submit.

How much of a speed difference does that make? I tried to get into your site but the link on your profile is to a non existing site?

Well I can tell say that my site is about 3 times faster than it was a month ago. Sorry about the profile link - I have updated it to the new address.

Any progress on this Pegasus? We're looking for this for a couple of forums. Any idea what sort of performance hit we'd have if we had 30,000+ entries in the wikipedia? Just wondering if it's feasible or if it'd bring the server to it's knees!

Good Question, I'd imagine it wouldn't slow down the speed too much, but am curious to know as well!

Very cool ... and I guess that it doesn't interfere w/ vbWiki. Is that correct? (Thanks)

It would only parse the current posts in your database on installation, the rest as they are created. So there would be no noticeable performance hit.

I'm almost done making upgrades on my site, so this mod is next on my list.
