Autolink plus preview

I got an idea earlier with autolink that I use on my site. This will be handy also for NuWiki.

Once there will be autlink there will be also preview of content. Something like snapshot but this will actually show readable content of the page/article.

Question is how much of the content? This should be either limited with tag or automatically (first paragraph etc.).

That's the way we have it implemented.

What we use to limit the amount of text shown is the headlines.

The idea is that you have a description / introduction at the top of the article, and then you add a headline then some text, and so on.

NuWiki's auto-links will show you the description/introduction up to the first headline.

If the article doesn't have a description, and starts with a headline, then we show the content up to the second headline.

If the article doesn't have any headlines whatsoever, then we show the whole article...

Am I right to think that autolink works only for cashed post and if I set up age for post to be cashed to 10 days, only 10 days old Wikies are going to be autolink?

If yes, isnt it against nature of Wiki articles that tend to be old pretty soon, since they are not discussions... ???
Then wouldnt be better to have extra cashe option for all wikie-posts/threads?

Thank you!!!

I agree with kafi that you need to have a "number of characters" cap that is put on it, regardless of how the article is structured. I had some crazy huge pop ups so far, and that isn't helpful to the users. I would just add a max characters field to AdminCP, much like the scripts that pull news from threads. Use the other rules about the headings and paragraph, but when you hit max characters, you truncate it. Default could be unlimited.

Kafi, you are correct. This is something that was brought to our attention recently.

However, notice that the way it is implemented, the Wiki links will be added only to posts that are cached. The links can point to old wiki articles.

We used the post cache because NuWiki AutoLinks were supposed to be a 'soft' feature, where the original post was not modified and everything worked seamlessly behind the scenes.

However a couple of users have mentioned the intention to use NuWiki AutoLinks exclusively (or at least for the most part). So we are working on a performance efficient solution to make autolinks permanent.

Mike, I think that Kafi was referring to a different issue.

Regarding the behavior you describe, the NuWiki AutoLinks preview (popup) shows the introduction (or excerpt) of the NuWiki article, to determine this it takes everything that is from the top of the article all the way to the first headline (h1, h2, etc).

Sorry to digg up an old thread, but this doesn't seem to work for me for alot of my articles. Also, if a autolinked term is a redirect, the popup shows the Redirect message instead of the excerpt of the redirected article. Empty popups and the REDIRECT bug in preview popups can be seen in this forumthread.

Both of these issues are bugs.

The first one has been reported previously, but we haven't been able to duplicate it consistently. The second one has been fixed in the current development build, and will be included in the next release.
