The nofollow attribute was first introduced by Google a couple of years ago, as a mechanism to fight span. In a nutshell, adding rel="nofollow" to an anchor tells Google (and other Search Engines) to ignore that link and not to follow it.
You can configure NuSEO to add rel="nofollow" to links pointing to external sites. NuSEO also uses rel="nofollow" to avoid duplicate content and enforce Link Consistency, two important goals in Search Engine Optimize.
Adding rel="nofollow" discourages spammers from littering your site. In addition, it is theorized that linking to low quality sites may lower your page rank.
